Consumer spending on games continues to be on a downward trend compared to last year, according to industry tracker The NPD Group. While subscription spending is showing signs of growth, that wasn’t enough to offset the 11% drop in spending on hardware, content and accessories.

June 2022 sales in dollars, in millions June 2021 June 2022 they change
Total video game sales $4878 $4,335 -11%
Video game content (full game physical and digital, DLC/MTX and subscription consumer spending across console, cloud, mobile*, mobile, PC and VR platforms)) $4,271 $3,789 -11%
Video game consoles $401 $371 -8%
Video game accessories 206 dollars $176 -15th%

“Consumer spending in June 2022 on video game hardware, content, and accessories was down 11% compared to last year, to $4.3 billion,” said Matt Piscatella, an analyst at NPD. “Growth in subscription spending cannot offset declines in other areas of content spending, while spending on hardware and accessories has declined.” PlayStation 5 had the highest dollar sales of all platforms, both in June and in the first half of 2022. The Nintendo Switch both topped in terms of unit sales.

According to data provided by Sensor Tower, the mobile market is also slightly declining, albeit less than in May – it fell 10.7% in June, compared to 12.6% in May. Sensor Tower speculates that the slower decline could be due to the launch of Diablo Immortal, which was in the top 10 revenue charts at both stores. Google Play showed the biggest decline, while the App Store showed a slight positive year-over-year growth.

Year to date 2022 Sales in dollars, in millions Since the beginning of 2021 Since the beginning of 2022 they change
Total video game sales $29,287 $26273 -10%
Video game content (full game physical and digital, DLC/MTX and subscription consumer spending across console, cloud, mobile*, mobile, PC and VR platforms)) $25,720 $23,093 -10%
Video game consoles $2,345 2310 US dollars -9%
Video game accessories $1,222 $1050 -14%
* Mobile spending provided by Sensor Tower

“The total spending in the first half was $26.3 billion, representing a 10% deficit compared to the same period in 2021. Subscription content is the only major spending category that showed growth in spending,” added Piscatella.

June 2022 NPD: The 20 best selling games of the month in the US

NPD tracks physical sales at retailers, but also gets digital data directly from publishers. Not every company is involved. For example, Nintendo does not share first-party sales, and Activision Blizzard does not offer sales from Battle.net.

These charts are sorted by dollar sales — not the number of units sold. This is for full game sales and does not include in-game spending.

It’s no surprise that Elden Ring and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga continue to dominate the chart. According to Piscatella, “Elden Ring ranks among the top 10 best-selling premium games of all time in the US market (sales in dollars).”

New games on the charts

One of the interesting quirks about this month, as opposed to previous months, is the number of new games that made it into the top 20 this month. While the charts for April and May consisted largely of previously released titles, five new games arrived in June, the highest number since March. This is likely due to the number of interesting new releases, which are arguably higher this month than they were. The new best-selling release is Mario Strikers: Battle League, followed by F1 22, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, Sonic Origins, and The Quarry.

Rising interest in old titles

The other interesting thing about the June charts is the number of games in the top 20 that were previously much lower ranked. For example, Final Fantasy VII: Remake was previously ranked at 159, but rose to ninth this month. This is likely due to the announcement of the sequel, among other promotional events in June to celebrate the original game’s 25th anniversary. According to Piscatella, Final Fantasy VII: Remake was last in the top 20 in May 2020. Other games have recently returned to the charts including Overwatch (from 59th to 5th place), following new details on the sequel; Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: The Hinokami Chronicles (56th to 14th place), which received a release on Switch, and Monster Hunter: Rise (from 30th to 13th), following the launch of the Sunbreak expansion.
